Delaware River Campgrounds

The Delaware River Region is a camper’s paradise, it’s where history was made and preserved, from Washington Crossing State Park travel along the Delaware River through historic towns, visit the homes of James Fenimore Cooper, Richard Stockton, Walt Whitman and Albert Einstein, don’t miss the Adventure Aquarium at the Camden Waterfront, and most of all don’t miss the hidden jewel of Salem County known as the garden spot of the garden state.

First stop on your adventure into New Jersey's scenic farmlands in the southwest of the Delaware River Region is Mullica Hill, settled in the late 17th century and built mostly during the Civil War era, has the best of the past and present. The entire town is on the National Register of Historic Places. Mullica Hill’s authentic historical background makes it an especially interesting spot for antiquers. There are nearly three dozen antiques shops here, most of which are located near or on Main Street, many occupying buildings as old as their wares.

Wine lovers have discovered Salem County and Southern New Jersey wine trails as an official American Viticulture Area (AVA) encompassing 2.25 million acres. This area has produced wine since 1864 and is home to many premiere varieties. Salem County and the surrounding area offer 19 vineyards and 16 wineries; most have been producing award-winning wines for decades. Many delightful day trips and weekends can be spent visiting these wineries and enjoying the different physical characteristics and selections of excellent wines.

As you drive through the country on your tour of Salem County, enjoying scenic farmlands, stop in Woodstown, a beautiful historic town with quaint shops, and many historical structures and homes. Main Street Woodstown looks like the ideal Main Street America. While there, dine in one of the several restaurants or cafes and spend an hour or so on the sidewalk walking tour of the many architecturally significant homes built in different period styles.

And of course there is Cowtown Rodeo. Since 1955 the Cowtown Rodeo has presented the thrills and excitement of a truly American Cowboy Tradition every week - this season marks 56 years. Howard "Stoney" Harris first started a rodeo in Woodstown, NJ in 1929. He held an annual rodeo until 1938 as a feature of the Salem County Fair, the rodeo was held on Main Street in Woodstown.

And last of the towns traveling through Salem County but first on your choice of destinations should be Salem, NJ. Salem is a city rich in American History. It is located on the Salem River and was founded by John Fenwick in 1673. The Old Salem County Courthouse is the second oldest courthouse in the United States; the oldest is King William County Courthouse in Virginia. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Salem was an important port engaged in shipbuilding and trade.
