New Jersey Winter Camping
Recommendation: Don't do it! Way too cold! But, if you must, then New Jersey Winter Campers can choose from 10 state parks and forests that offer camping facilities year-round. The New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry website recommends Stokes State Forest with its panoramic vistas and winter activities like ice fishing, ice skating, sledding, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Jenny Jump State Forest in Warren County permits winter camping in shelters.

Wilderness Camping in NJ
These campsites are either online accessible by hiking or boating or are off limits to vehicles.

Round Valley Recreation Area

Round Valley is one of the few parks that offers wilderness camping in New Jersey. The campsites on the eastern side of the reservoir are accessible only by hiking or boating. Venture out and find a spot! The brisk blue waters of Round Valley Reservoir attract swimmers, boaters, fishermen, picnickers and campers to its scenic shore. A reservoir swimming area was created by the construction of an earth dam. The reservoir covers over 2,000 acres and is over 180 feet deep, the deepest lake in New Jersey. It has a water capacity of 55 billion gallons. The reservoir is stocked with lake trout. Cross-country skiers and sledding enthusiasts congregate at Round Valley in the winter months.

Wharton State Forest is home to Batsto Village, a former bog iron and glassmaking industrial center from 1766 to 1867 that currently reflects the agricultural and commercial enterprises that existed here during the late 19th century. Throughout Wharton are rivers and streams for canoeing, hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Campsites at Bodine Field, Hawkins Bridge, Batona, Mullica River and Goshen Pond have hand pumps for water and pit toilets. Primitive campsites are available at Button Hill and Lower Forge (no running water). Mullica River and Lower Forge can only be accessed by hiking, canoeing or horseback.
